The US Air Force has decided against allowing a commercial airport to be built on Homestead Air Force Base, Florida, which was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

The decision apparently reflects the view that the siting of a commercial airport on the base could be harmful to the Everglades and Biscayne national parks. The 717 acre site is likely to be offered to Miami-Dade County for mixed use.
