In the first of two articles, Rory Murray looks at the history of the census, and outlines why the Irish ethnic category in the forthcoming Census is good news for the Irish in Britain.
In 1801, two events took place, which were profoundly significant for the people of these islands. That was the year that the infamous Act of Union came into effect, which saw the abolition of the Irish parliament in Dublin, after less than two decades of a measure of Home Rule. But it was also the year of the first Census of modern times in Britain.
