New York State Governor George E. Pataki, citing nanotechnology research at the University at Albany's Institute for Materials (UAIM), as well as photonics research at Rochester and bioinformatics development at Buffalo, recently unveiled significantly expanded efforts to capitalize on the knowledge base in the state's universities and research centers. Pataki's state of the state message identified a forthcoming one billion dollar, N.Y. State-supported, high tech initiative to fund advanced university research, development, and economic outreach, in collaboration with leading businesses.
