A problem police have with crime-fighting world-wide is the identification of firearms used in murder, armed robbery or any other violent crime in which, particularly, a hand gun has been used. Stolen weapons invariably have had the serial number filed off when they are seized by security officers, making the tracing of the weapon back to its original owner laborious and time-consuming.
Now the Criminal Record Centre Research Department (CRCRD) of the South African Police Services has scored a major breakthrough in forensic technology with its magnetic yoke that retrieves serial numbers in gun metal that have been removed by grinding or other means.
