"The House of Mirth." rated PG. At Kendall Square and West Newton cinemas. two and a half stars (out of four)
In Terence Davies' "The House of Mirth," Gillian Anderson, also known as FBI agent Dana Scully, gives a radiant performance as Lily Bart, the doomed heroine of Edith Wharton's great 1905 novel.
But it's the radiance of phosphorescence, the eerie glow of death. By the end, Anderson and the film lay entombed in Davies' stately, marble sepulcher. Davies' work, including the aptly titled 1988 childhood memoir "Distant Voices, Still Lives," has met with considerable critical acclaim.
