Jan. 19--Caught in the grip of the West Coast's power crisis, the Bonneville Power Administration declared a power emergency Thursday morning and began releasing more water from federal dams than normally allowed under Endangered Species Act protections for salmon.
Northwest Endangered Fish Follow the debate as the Pacific Northwest region struggles to preserve salmon and trout for future generations.
There will be no immediate impact on the fish, officials said. But the action -- a 20 percent increase in the amount of water sent through turbines at Bonneville Dam -- makes it likely that large numbers of young salmon will die this spring and summer as ...
