Congolese dictator Laurent Kabila was engaged in the daily routine of running his nation and had no reason to believe he was in imminent danger on the day he was assassinated, Newsweek has learned. An official who was at the palace at the time of the shooting tells Africa Regional Editor Tom Masland in the January 29 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, January 22) that a young guard entered the room where Kabila was holding meetings and approached him as if to whisper something in his ear.
