According to China Daily (January 17, 2001), Shanghai registered a total contractual foreign investment of $6.39 billion in 2000. According to the most current statistics, this is an increase of 56 percent from 1999. The amount of foreign investment actually used last year reached $3.16 billion, up 4 percent year on year.
