I've always had a hard time grasping the "because it's there" mindset. Mountain climber George Mallory's roguish explanation of why he wanted to attempt Mount Everest has assumed a pompous nobility, declared as reason enough for pursuits that defy reason.
Now we're watching a similar pursuit. I may think that Ann Bancroft is one of the coolest people around, but I still don't get what makes her want to trudge across Antarctica or why we should care. Remember those pictures of her training? There she was, jogging down a gravel road dragging a line of tires tied to her waist. Seemed nuts to me.
