Editor's note: As his second term as president drew to a close, Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) delivered a farewell address in which he warned of the dangers of a "military-industrial complex." The term was the creation of presidential speechwriter Malcolm Moos, who went on to be president of the University of Minnesota. Military spending by 1960 had grown to more than half the federal budget, and as a result it played a profound role in the national economy and the academic community. Eisenhower's speech, excerpted here, was unusual for a president who had not made much use of the "bully pulpit."
