Article: Steep Increase Reported in Young, German Females.(with newly diagnosed lung cancer)

2000 NOV 23 - (NewsRx.com) -- Data from approximately 5,000 patients with newly diagnosed lung cancer at Lungenklinik Heckeshom, Berlin, Germany, show that the proportion of young female patients below the age of 46 has doubled and reached the number of young males suffering from lung cancer.

The period studied was 1986 to 1995. The report was published in the November 2000 issue of the European Respiratory Journal.

The main risk factor is smoking, and females may be more susceptible to develop lung cancer. In particular, gender differences in nicotine metabolism or hormonal effects need to be addressed, the authors report.
