2000 NOV 23 - (NewsRx.com) -- First trimester screening for genetic disorders is now possible using dry maternal blood spots on filter paper.
"Prenatal screening for Down syndrome and open neural tube defects using maternal serum markers is well established in the second trimester of pregnancy," stated S.B. Melancon and colleagues from Procrea Genetic Services, Quebec, Canada, and NTD Laboratories, Inc., New York. "However, sufficient data is available to consider moving maternal screening earlier into the first trimester and coupling it with an ultrasound (US) nuchal translucency (NT) measurement."
