The U.S. pet food industry is an estimated $11.5 billion business. On a worldwide basis, the industry is set at $27 billion. Annual rate of growth for the industry is 4-7%.
For U.S. grain producers, the pet food industry is particularly important because of the large quantities of agricultural products used in pet diets. Such products include grains, animal byproducts, corn gluten meal, wheat and wheat byproducts, brewers dried yeast, sorghums and corn oil. In the case of corn, 3.6 million tons are used in the 8.8 million tons of dry pet foods manufactured each year.
