Article: Data Dereg Rises with Sponsor.(deregulation of cable industry)

WASHINGTON -- For the last two years, the cable industry has banked on House Commerce Committee chairman Rep. Tom Bliley to smother any bill designed to ease regulatory burdens on the Baby Bell phone companies, however popular.

But the 68-year-old Virginia Republican retired last year, taking with him cable's political insurance policy in the House.

Bliley's successor as chairman of the renamed Energy and Commerce Committee is Rep. Billy Tauzin (R-La.), who is hell-bent on using his gavel to quickly advance legislation that would deregulate the Bells' offering of high-speed Internet access.

In a few weeks, Tauzin plans to hold a press conference ...
