What was Adam's background? Born on September 24, 1564, in Gillingham, Kent, Adams became an apprentice to a shipyard owner Master Nicholas Diggins at Limehouse, at the age of 12. He trained there for 12 years, learning astronomy, navigation and shipbuilding.
Where did he first travel to? After serving in the Royal Navy under Sir Francis Drake, he became a `pilot' for the company Barbary Merchants and went on an expedition to the Arctic. This lasted two years, during which he and the crew searched for a ...
