Crown Resources, the Swiss-based oil trading affiliate of Russia's Alfa business group, is in advanced discussions to merge with Marc Rich Investments (MRI), a commodities vehicle set up over three years ago owned by controversial magnate Marc Rich.
If the deal goes through, it will be one of the very few examples of a fusion of Russian assets with Western trading and financial expertise. But sources familiar with both companies say the two companies' management styles are too different to make it a successful marriage. There are also doubts over Crown's long-term relationship with Alfa, which has begun transferring powers to new subsidiaries.
