CATHOLICS celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi today. One of the universally acclaimed holy men of history, Francis of Assisi is remembered and respected beyond the pale of Catholicism. He is the patron saint of ecology and the hero of many contemporary environmental activists.
Born in 1181 or 1182 into a merchant class family of Assisi in the beautiful Umbrian region of Italy, Francis Bernardone was deeply moved by the spirit and romanticism of the late 12th century.
