Jan. 25--SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va.--For 35 years, the second-highest dam east of the Mississippi has kept the Gauley River from spilling out of its boulder-strewn banks and flooding downstream cities including Charleston.
By the end of April, Summersville Dam will make a midlife transition and take on a new function: generating enough power to keep a Charleston-sized city flowing with electricity long into the next century.
Construction is nearly 90 percent complete on a $53 million, 80-megawatt hydroelectric powerhouse complex at the base of the 40-story-tall dam.
