Q: My husband and I have two children. We have a problem that I don't believe is that unusual: My in-laws favor our daughter over our son. Even though Jim is only 5 years old and Wendy is 4, I can see differences in the way they are treated. I'm sure the kids are picking up on it on some level.

My in-laws only had two sons, so I think maybe they favor my daughter because they never had a girl. I can almost understand why they prefer my daughter, because she's a typical girl who loves dressing up and playing with dolls, whereas my son is big and tough.
