Scott High School graduate David Ponder is serving a 60-day sentence in a Navy brig in Pensacola, Fla., for refusing to take the anthrax vaccine.
Surrounded by sailors who went AWOL or were caught with illegal drugs, Ponder's only contact with his parents, wife and 16-month-old son is on Sundays, when he can make phone calls and see visitors.
It's a strange turn of events for the 22-year-old who wanted so badly to join the Navy that he tried - unsuccessfully - to get his parents' permission to enlist when he was only 17. Ponder subsequently signed up for five years, beginning in 1997.
