Religious ideals larger than church's rules for some
Though many Catholics who deviate from traditional marriage norms gravitate toward more liberal churches, many others, unwilling to abandon the familiar comforts of a childhood faith, gradually find ways to accommodate and belong.
Take Marta and Magaly Alquijay-Perez, two women who met in high school and were friends before they were lovers. Nearly two decades ago, after they'd become a couple, they decided they wanted to adopt a child. Los Angeles County officials raised no objection.
