A low-pollution, high-efficiency tin electrolyte has reportedly been commercially introduced by NKK Steel, Japan, and its United States subsidiary, National Steel Corp. Steel sheet plated in the tin electrolyte is called electrolytic tinpiate, a material for food and beverage cans. To achieve uniform tin plating, high-performance additives must be added to the bath. The two standard electrolytes are the phenol sulfonic acid-based ferrostan electrolyte, which is preferred in Japan; and the tin halide-based halogen electrolyte, which is widely used in the United States.
