Pilots are not autopilots. They do not function accurately for hours on end, unbroken by rest. It is almost a trite reminder, but people need sleep, and fatigue might be described as a latent threat to air safety. Yet there is much that individual pilots can do to prepare themselves for a rigorous flying schedule, and for dealing with fatigue in the cockpit. Fatigue countermeasures can be employed to combat the effects of long hours awake, and pilots can use simple guidelines for assessing their fitness for flight.
