WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 - With only one day to go before the U.S. Senate votes on the confirmation of Interior Secretary-designate Gale A. Norton, the partisan debate that has marked her nomination process for the last month appears to have lessened dramatically in its intensity.
The Senate convened Monday to debate Norton's nomination, but only Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., came out in stark opposition to Norton, whose history as an advocate of developing public lands has spurred an aggressive media campaign spearheaded by the Sierra Club and other environmental groups.
