Thailand Of elephants and dragons
MONTH by month, Thailand is looking more like a dragon. A year ago Thais and those who do business with them were excited and amazed by projections that, before the century is out, their country will be in the same league as Asia's other "little dragons" - Taiwan, South Korea, Hongkong and Singapore. The latest figures show that prospect approaching. Last year GNP growth topped 10% in real terms, and the value of exports rose 33% to 400 billion baht ($16 billion). More than 4m tourists went to Thailand, spending a record 57 billion baht. A lot of Thais became richer, but there is cause for worry too.
