He's been a working musician for 23 years, ever since his band, Taxi Girl, was the New Order of France. But even in Paris, where this Swiss-born son of an Italian mother and an Afghan father has lived since 1967, Mirwais (pronounced MERE-wes) Ahmadzai was not a mainstream success. Last year his compatriot Stephane Sednaoui, photographer and video-maker to the stars, gave a tape of Mirwais' wiggy, Breeders-sampling track "Disco Science" to Madonna.
