Jan. 27--CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa--Iowa Steel demolition contractor David Zinser's bad luck has lately been archaeologist Christopher Schoen's good fortune.
Zinser was removing the concrete foundation of a building formerly used for steel fabrication at the old Iowa Steel and Iron Works on 12th Avenue SE when the excavator bucket came up filled with limestone foundation blocks. He immediately suspected he'd run across another fascinating bit of early Cedar Rapids history, and, Schoen says, he was right.
