When Willie O'Ree adds up his professional hockey career he comes up with 11 teams, 21 years, hundreds of stitches.
And one big first.
O'Ree became professional hockey's first black player when he joined the Boston Bruins in 1958.
Now he's director of youth development for the National Hockey League / U.S. Hockey Diversity Task Force, a nonprofit program that introduces children of diverse ethnic backgrounds to the sport.
O'Ree, in town for the NHL All-Star Game this weekend, told his story Tuesday to 100 students at Smiley Middle School, 2540 Holly St.
