Welcome to Wasco, a small corner of the San Joaquin Valley northwest of Bakersfield that calls itself "the rose-growing capital of the world." And not without justification: last year seven major nurseries grew more than 50 million rose bushes here, almost three-quarters of all those sold in this country. Starting in early May, rows of blossoms streak the fields near the town of Wasco: 4,000 acres of hybrid teas, floribundas, tree roses, and grandifloras paint the land with fiery reds, fragile pinks, electric yellows, and purplish reds so deep they almost look black.
