ALTHOUGH THE market for mining chemicals is relatively mature, some industry observers are hopeful that increased mining activity in China and other developing countries will push demand growth slightly above growth in gross domestic product (GDP). Also, the Southern Hemisphere is expected to be a potentially strong market for mining chemicals.
Mines and ore processors in the US, Canada and Mexico spent an estimated $1 billion for 13.2 billion pounds of chemicals and materials used in the extraction, beneficiation and transport of ores and minerals in 1999. Of that $1 billion, the US spent 79 percent; Canada, 14 percent; and Mexico, 7 percent.
