The US State Department has waded into a bizarre New Year's tussle in Georgia between American group AES, which operates a gas-fired power plant outside the capital Tbilisi, and two companies linked to Russia's Gazprom. One of these, Itera, stands accused by AES of trying to monopolize Georgia's gas market. The dispute revolves around supplies of Russian to Georgia, which over the past ten days have been plagued by mysterious interruptions.
On Jan. 1, AES' Russian partner Inneftegazstroi (ING) halted gas supplies, despite the fact that it has a contract to supply AES with 450 MMcm (15.9 Bcf) of gas up to April 2001. Deliveries were resumed within days, but this ...
