Abigail Quigley McCarthy - author, political activist and wife of former U.S. Sen. Eugene McCarthy - died Thursday evening from breast cancer complications at her home in Washington, D.C.

She was 85.

McCarthy had had breast cancer for the past 15 years, said her son Michael. Doctors discovered the cancer had spread to her bones earlier this winter when she fell and broke her leg.

Funeral services are planned in McCarthy's hometown of Wabasha, Minn., next week. A memorial service is planned in Washington, D.C., said her husband Eugene, 84, a two-term senator from Minnesota.

The McCarthys separated in 1969 but never divorced.
