I was deeply impressed by the editors' analysis of international competition and historical contradictions among capitalist nationstates (MR, November 1987) .I would like to record some thoughts which sprang from reading their article.
Although they have often written of them in other places, in this article the editors did not mention two salient features of the modern world. One, of course, is the fact that more than a third of the world now belongs to the states of "actually existing socialism." Although closely linked to and affected by the capitalist camp, they are not part of it and they operate differently.
