"WHAT LIES BENEATH," the name of a recent movie, could well be the slogan for the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport on the Kitsap Peninsula.
Opened in 1991 as an official Navy museum, there's a lot more to it than just naval undersea operations. One of only nine museums in the state that is accredited by the American Association of Museums, it's close enough to Seattle to visit on a day trip.
Outside the museum, the large sail from the USS Sturgeon submarine looms next to the entrance. Inside the front door, a display of nine diving helmets - from early models to today's streamlined versions - shows how technology has changed over the years.
