WASHINGTON _ Once upon a time, in a basketball league far, far away, there was an All-Star Game. The MVP of that game wasn't some cloud-hopping, tomahawk-dunking wing-walker. It was a point guard, who was maybe 5-foot-8, and didn't care if he never got to shoot.

The inaugural All-Star Game of the old American Basketball Association, which gave us among others, Denver and Indiana and the Nets and Julius Erving and Moses Malone, was played in 1968, and the MVP was Larry Brown. He had both of his own hips then, and he threw passes to die for.
