THERE is something very sadistic about people who foist Old Wives' type cures on you when you are at your most vulnerable.

A friend of mine is a great believer in the unproven recipes of time long past.

She once insisted that her heavily pregnant sister drank a bottle of liquid paraffin to bring on her labour.

The poor woman, who wasn't feeling the best anyway, was in so much pain she must have felt as if she had already gone through labour.
