Writing in The Outlook in 1903, a reviewer noted of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, ". . .every object of art, from Titian's 'Rape of Europa' to the carved lions in the cloisters, is a part of a splendid whole, and not a ticketed item in a collection." This remains the Gardner's chief charm and the most oft-stated criticism of the museum: With so much to see in such a dense and intoxicating setting, it's easy to overlook some of the collection's smaller but equally significant treats.
