WHILE ATTACKING THE TOWN of Mantes in Normandy in 1087, King William became ill. According to some reports, he was injured in a fall from his horse. In either case, William retreated to Rouen, where he died on September 9, 1087. His three sons inherited his kingdom.
Robert became duke of Normandy, and William Rufus, king of England. Henry inherited money. When William Rufus died, Henry became king. Henry's nephew Stephen followed him and named Henry's grandson as his heir. Henry II and his descendants are called the Plantagenets.
