Today is Abraham Lincoln's birthday, a date that used to be celebrated nationwide until it was replaced by the uninspiring Presidents Day. Still, Lincoln's birthday is widely celebrated by members of the Republican Party -- who ought to use this day to get back to their roots.
As they attend their Lincoln Day dinners in counties throughout Wisconsin, state Republicans should pause in their congratulatory backslapping on recapturing the White House and maintaining their congressional edge to remember what the party of Lincoln stood for. It may help them make "compassionate conservatism" a reality instead of a seeming oxymoron.
