Indonesia annexed East Timor by force in 1975-76, when the Portuguese, after 400 years of colonial presence left this part of the island in disarray. A long guerrilla war followed in which Fretilin (Frente Revolucionario de Este Timor Independente) struggled for a free East Timor. Indonesia was not prepared to accept independence of their province until President Suharto finally resigned in 1998. His successor, B. J. Habibi, cleared the road, albeit reluctantly, to East Timor's independence by granting a vote on the subject.
