For the first time in official memory, the state Department of Natural Resources on Friday ordered residents of northeast Madison to boil their water until further notice because of E. coli contamination.
E. coli does not necessarily make people ill, said John Standridge, water microbiologist with the state Laboratory of Hygiene, but it does indicate water has been contaminated with feces.
E. coli is found in the gut of healthy humans, he said, but only certain variations of the bacteria cause illness.
Officials don't know yet if the kind in the water here causes sickness, said Mary Ellen Testen, Madison Health Department laboratory supervisor.
