DO YOU BELIEVE the common notion that "short fishing rods are more sporting than long rods"? Do you think that if you want more fun while playing hooked fish, a seven-foot flyrod is better than a nine-foot rod, or a five-foot spinning rod is better than a 6 1/2-footer of comparable construction?
Though widely held, this view is fundamentally mistaken. In fact, it's got things exactly backward. Here's why:
When a fish is hooked, the rod becomes a lever for applying (and absorbing) force. A short rod is a demonstrably more effective lever than a long rod of similar dynamics, and thus it will subdue a fish more quickly. So in reality, a long rod is actually ...
