SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Knowing the host, his talents and the topics set to be discussed, Bob Costas' new hour-long sports show on HBO, which starts its 12-week season Wednesday at 11 p.m., is probably going to be interesting all by itself.
Big sports fan Tom Hanks, NBA Commissioner David Stern, Oscar Robertson and Yankee Manager Joe Torre on the debut show? Sounds fine.
If you ask me, famously rowdy fan Jimmy Buffett, Howard Stern and Yankee owner George Steinbrenner would be a more scintillating stew, but maybe that's a later show.
Still, in this XFL-laced, self-promoting, neon-spackled sports atmosphere, it's probably more intriguing to talk about ...
