SALT LAKE CITY _ He could see the finish line, but was feeling worse with every stride. His legs were wobbly, his stomach churned. And then, in a slow-motion moment, he stumbled and passed out, landing with his face against the cinders.
His mother, Lenore, and girlfriend watched from the crowd as he scrambled up, determined to complete the race even though he was sick and had no chance to win. He pushed on until he eclipsed the finish line, collapsed again, and was carried off on a stretcher.
