Some of us, had we just finished skiing across the Antarctic continent, might call it quits on reaching the Ross Ice Shelf. Park that 250-pound sled, step out of the harness, call for an air taxi to McMurdo. Kick back with hot coffee and a little aquavit.
Really, who needs the extra points after a 90-day traverse of mountains, glaciers and crevasses? Who would be up for skiing another 500 miles across a floating pad of sea ice, racing the clock to reach open water before the ship for home must sail?
