The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated that 182,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women were diagnosed in the United States in the year 2000, while 41,200 women died as a result. These numbers have remained relatively stable over the past years, with a slight increase in breast cancer diagnoses likely related to the advances in detection via mammography. The ACS also suggested that 1 in every 8 women will develop breast cancer sometime in their life, and 1 in every 30 women will die of this disease. Mammography and clinical breast examinations have become the two principal means of screening women for breast cancer.
