The "shocking inequality" of the present world and the need "to take better care of God's creation" were underlined in a personal way by Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey in a message for the new year.
The prelate indicated that even his own guileless grandchildren may become despoilers of the planet unless today's adults act responsibly. He made his remarks on New Year's Eve in a broadcast on BBC television.
