Diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision impairment in the United States. The National Eye Institute (May 2000) reports that 40-45% of the 10.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy; in 600,000-700,000 cases, it is severe enough to cause vision loss. Annually, as many as 24,000 people become blind as a result of this disorder. According to the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (1993), up to a 76% reduction in the risk for diabetic retinopathy occurs with more intensive diabetes management.
