The $5,000 adoption tax credit, which helps families defray the costs of adoption and expires this year, could double under a bill introduced in the House of Representatives.
"Adoption provides children with a loving, permanent home," said Rep. Jim DeMint, South Carolina Republican and one of 188 cosponsors of the Hope for Children Act.
With many private and international adoptions costing between $8,000 and $30,000, the bill should help more families "open their homes to children in need," Mr. DeMint said at a news conference Thursday.
