In the fall of 1998, Jeff Brokamp, newly hired principal of the School for Creative and Performing Arts, went backstage during its major musical production and was troubled to see the student actors changing costumes in a common dressing area.
In the aftermath of the early '90s sex scandals that brought the school dangerously close to closure, Brokamp went ballistic.
''I became almost Hitleresque. I said boys and girls had to have separate dressing rooms,'' Brokamp recalls. ''It had evolved here that that sort of behavior was what you do.
